HPV Testing for Men

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a widespread sexually transmitted infection that affects both men and women. While often linked to cervical cancer, HPV also poses risks to men, potentially causing genital warts and cancers of the penis, anus, throat, and tongue base. The virus spreads through skin or mucosal contact during sexual activity, often without symptoms. High-risk HPV strains can lead to serious complications, making regular screening and vaccination necessary for prevention.

Who Should Consider HPV Testing?

HPV testing is recommended for men in the following situations:

  • No Visible Symptoms but Concerned About HPV Risk

Men who want to check for asymptomatic HPV infections, especially if they have multiple sexual partners.

  • History of HPV Exposure

Those with past exposure to HPV or partners diagnosed with HPV-related conditions.

  • High-Risk Groups

Men who have sex with men (MSM) and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of persistent HPV infections.

  • Presence of Genital Warts

Visible lesions in the genital or anal area may indicate an HPV infection, warranting confirmation and strain identification.

HPV Testing for Men (Urine Test)

HPV urine testing is a non-invasive method used to detect high-risk HPV strains in men. This test analyses a urine sample for HPV DNA, allowing for the detection of infections that may not present with visible symptoms. Regular testing is recommended for individuals with higher exposure risks, such as men with multiple sexual partners or those who engage in receptive anal sex. Early diagnosis provides better guidance for management and reduces the likelihood of complications.

What to Expect from a Urine HPV Test

The urine HPV test begins with a consultation, where the doctor reviews your sexual health history and assesses risk factors. You will then provide a first-catch urine sample in a sterile container for laboratory analysis. The sample is tested for HPV DNA to determine the presence of the virus and identify specific strains. Results are typically available within 3-5 working days, after which the doctor will review the findings and discuss any necessary follow-ups or treatment options.

  • Treponema pallidum (TP)

  • HPV DNA Genotyping Test (HPV28)

Other HPV Screening Options

In addition to urine testing, other screening methods may be used in specific cases:

Anal Pap Smear

Recommended for men at higher risk of anal cancer, particularly those who engage in receptive anal intercourse. This test involves collecting a sample of anal cells to check for abnormalities linked to HPV.

Visual Examination

A doctor may inspect the genital and anal areas for visible signs of HPV-related lesions, such as warts or unusual skin changes. This is often part of a routine assessment but does not confirm HPV presence on its own.

Biopsy

If abnormal growths or suspicious lesions are detected, a small tissue sample may be taken for further laboratory analysis to determine if HPV or other conditions are present.

Treatment for HPV Infections

While there is no cure for HPV, treatment focuses on managing its symptoms and related conditions. Genital warts, for example, can be treated with topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy, or surgical removal, depending on their size and location. Regular screening enables early detection and monitoring, helping to guide appropriate medical care when needed.

Prevention and Management

Preventing HPV involves reducing exposure risk and supporting overall health. While the virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, regular screening helps detect infections early, especially for those with higher risk factors. Managing HPV focuses on monitoring for any developments, addressing symptoms like genital warts if they arise, and maintaining a healthy immune system. Currently, the only active prevention available for men is HPV vaccination. It is recommended for men 45 years and below and it confers protection against 9 strains of HPV including 7 strains responsible for high-risk cancers. Speak to your doctor to find out if the vaccine is suitable for you.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the urine HPV test?

Urine testing is effective at detecting high-risk HPV strains but may not identify all cases, especially those in the throat or deeper tissue layers.

Can HPV be transmitted even if I have no symptoms?

Yes, HPV can be passed to partners even when no symptoms are present. This is why regular screening and vaccination are important.

What happens if my test result is positive?

A positive result indicates the presence of HPV DNA. Your doctor will discuss follow-up actions, which may include additional screening, monitoring, or treatment depending on symptoms and strain type.
